We love our cats and dogs. It’s safe to say our world is better with a faithful pet in it. But my goodness, they will chow down on just about anything and everything. Unfortunately most cannot read the labels on our foods, household products and plants. I say most because I knew a Standard Poodle that I swear could read in three languages. But generally we are their protectors when it comes to keeping them out of harms way. Let’s pet proof the following food items.
- Alcohol
- Avocado
- Macadamia nuts
- Grapes and raisins
- Yeast dough
- Xylitol (sweetener often found in gum candy and toothpaste)
- Onions, garlic and chives
- Salt
We also have to be careful with our household items. Many are toxic to our pet.
- Most human medications.
- Illegal drugs
- Fertilizers
- Insecticide
- Antifreeze
- Rodenticides
- Mothballs
- Most household cleaners
- Batteries
- De-icers with salt content
- Raw/under cooked food
Many household plants can create a danger as well. Here is a very partial list.
- Lilies
- Autumn Crocus
- Daffodils
- Tulips
- Lily of the valley
Please contact your veterinarian if your pet gets a little too adventuresome with their diet and starts to munch where they shouldn’t.
